Word of the Week

Occhiolism

n. the awareness of the smallness of your perspective, by which you couldn’t possibly draw any meaningful conclusions at all, about the world or the past or the complexities of culture, because although your life is an epic and unrepeatable anecdote, it still only has a sample size of one, and may end up being the control for a much wilder experiment happening in the next room.

I think that this is one of those emotions that being in simple state of mind or somber state of mind it just naturally comes to someone. I like finding words that describe complex emotions or feelings that someone may feel at one point in time.

Has anyone else gone through this feeling as well? I think this is one of the most unique I have found so far.

  1. What a cool word!

Thank you for educating me on it ^_^

Yes, I have felt that before and it is a somber and profound state but one adapts :-)

  2. I can honestly say I've never seen that word before. How cool.

And I've definitely had these experiences, a couple times actually.

Both times, it was actually on top of a mountain, in one way or another (once in Hawai'i, once in Japan). Both cases, I was looking out at the sunset/night, once over expanse of the Pacific Ocean, and other of the lights of a gigantic megacity...I realized both the enormity of what I'd managed to do, but also just how small that accomplishment actually was, in scale to what was in spread out in from of me. Definitely surreal.

It vaguely reminds me of the word "hiraeth." It's a Welsh word, with no direct English translation...one individual put it as "longing for home, even if one isn't sure where home is."

It sounds kind of like that.

  5. I feel like you are a writer. I think everybody goes though this emotion at least once. If you are in philosophy, you go through this emotion everyday.

  7. I have never heard of the word, but if I am understanding it right. I Think I have had this feeling once that I can clearly remember. I was on a cruise and it was late at night. I went on the very top deck of the ship, the ocean was total darkness, as big as the ship was, both it and I felt like a spec in the darkness. It felt like I could feel the roundness of the earth. It was a surreal feeling.

  11. Occhiolism is a word I have never heard before I think it is interesting it reminds me of the idea that everyone thinks they are the star of their own movie. This is why a lot of people struggle with empathy and understanding other peoples experiences.
