Word of the Week

Sonder: The feeling of acknowledging of how strangers live a life as complex as your own.

I found this word as a Tik-Tok, and looked up where the word has come from and found out that is one of many words that has been recently created and being accepted by people to be a word. John Koenig is the man behind the creation of this word and is part of a dictionary that he has created to make the best for ways to express emotions that many people don't have a way to express that feeling.

Many people don't think about this for being so busy with their own lives that these sort of situations go over our head and it is very humbling to know that there are more people that acknowledge that others have a life of their own and things to do.

  1. Cool word!

I looked up John Koenig and The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrow. So he just makes up new words?

  3. Sonder is a word that everybody should live by. Just because your life is complex, doesn't mean that other peoples lives aren't. They are going through stuff just as complicated as your own.

  4. Peoples' lives are arguably, in the Information Age, more complex than ever before. Unlimited choice, the continuous flow of information, etc. The increasing complexity of society exerts effects on the language that it uses; language isn't a static thing.

Kudos to this Koenig fellow for being able to find a niche in all of this.

  5. When I am out in a restaurant or shopping, I like to pause and remember that everyone there is living their own life and it feels very surreal because it feels like everyone is in your world, but then also you're in their world.

  7. People tend to focus on his/her self more so nowadays than how it use to be in the olden days. I guess technology may have played a role in that. Nonetheless, the fact remain that people just live in their own world and it seems quite normal.

  9. Another new word to add to my vocabulary! We are all living our own individual lives and when I figured that out it helped me with so many unknown feelings about the world.

  10. I try to never forget that everyone is going through their own lives. Never undermine what problems they might be living through. That's how I try to maintain my respect and mannerisms towards others.

  13. I wonder if sonder is another word for empathy because empathy is about putting yourself in the place of others something that many people struggle with.
